The card collector's view

Messier's rookie card is the 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee #289 — the only mainstream Messier rookie, since the 1980-81 Topps checklist was smaller and skipped him entirely. Centering issues make PSA 9+ examples notoriously scarce. The card is also a UER — the back incorrectly lists Messier as a right-handed shot. O-Pee-Chee and Topps releases from 1981-2004 cover his Oilers, Rangers, and Canucks years. Modern Upper Deck SP Authentic, The Cup, and retrospective Oilers and Rangers sets offer signed and patch options.

About Mark Messier at FreshDCards

Mark Messier is The Moose — the only player to ever captain two different franchises to a Stanley Cup. Five with Edmonton alongside Gretzky, then the C in New York, where in 1994 he guaranteed a Game 6 win against the Devils in the Eastern Conference Finals and went out and delivered a hat trick to send the Rangers to the Final. The 54-year Cup drought ended six games later. Six Cups total. 1,887 career points. The leadership template every NHL captaincy since has measured against.
