June 21 in Yankees History: Yankees announce Lou Gehrig's retirement (1939)

Two days after the Mayo Clinic revealed his ALS diagnosis, the Yankees announced Lou Gehrig's retirement and proclaimed July 4, 1939 "Lou Gehrig Day." That day Gehrig delivered his famous "luckiest man" farewell address at Yankee Stadium.
