On January 30 1948 — Former Pitcher Herb Pennock collapses and dies from a heart attack. Pennock, who was 53, had been serving as the general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies since 1944. His untimely demise will be a catalyst for his election to the Hall of Fame later this year.
