Sandy Koufax declined to start Game 1 of the 1965 World Series in observance of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Don Drysdale started in his place, and Koufax later delivered shutout performances in Games 2, 5, and 7, earning another World Series MVP award.
