The Retired Numbers of the San Diego Padres

Retiring a number is the highest honor a baseball franchise can give, a way of saying that no one who ever wears this uniform will need that number again because it already belongs to a legend. The San Diego Padres have reserved that tribute for two players who gave everything to this city and this team.

#19 - Tony Gwynn (retired September 4 2004) (Hall of Fame)

Tony Gwynn was simply the greatest hitter in San Diego Padres history, a player so devoted to the craft that he became one of the most respected players of his era. Over his career with the Padres he collected 3,141 hits and posted a lifetime batting average of .338, numbers that helped earn him a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
