#21 - Roberto Clemente (retired April 6 1973) (Hall of Fame)

Roberto Clemente wore No. 21 with a pride and brilliance that transcended the game itself, spending his entire career in Pittsburgh and finishing with a lifetime batting average of .317 and exactly 3,000 career hits. He was a two-time World Series champion, a twelve-time Gold Glove right fielder, and one of the most beloved figures in the history of the sport. The Pirates retired his number in 1973, just months after he lost his life in a humanitarian mission on New Year's Eve, and the honor has stood ever since as a tribute to the man as much as the ballplayer.
