The 2026 MLB All-Star Game has its Legends — and one of them is a name every Detroit Tigers fan knows by heart. Justin Verlander has been named a 2026 All-Star Legend Pick by Commissioner Rob Manfred, a special honor reserved for players whose careers have shaped the game itself. It is Verlander's 10th career All-Star selection, and he shares this year's Legend Pick distinction with Phillies star Bryce Harper as the Midsummer Classic comes to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
For Tigers fans it means even more: Verlander joins Miguel Cabrera as one of only two Detroit Tigers ever chosen as an All-Star Legend Pick.
Built in Detroit
Before the World Series rings and the 3,000-strikeout milestones, there was a flame-throwing kid in the Old English D. Verlander spent his first 13 seasons in Detroit and stacked up a résumé that reads like a Hall of Fame plaque:
- 2006 AL Rookie of the Year
- 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young — led the majors with 24 wins and 250 strikeouts
- Two no-hitters as a Tiger (2007 and 2011)
- Six All-Star selections during his first Detroit run
- Ace of the staff that carried the Tigers to their first World Series appearance since 1984
Across a 21-year career he has piled up 266 wins (37th all-time) and 3,554 strikeouts (8th all-time), and he is one of only two players in history — alongside Don Newcombe — to win Rookie of the Year, a Cy Young, and an MVP.
A Legend's Send-Off
The honor lands at a fitting moment: Verlander has announced he will retire at the end of this season. “I wanted the game to tell me when it was time,” he said. “Over the last several months, I've realized that time has come.” He joins past Legend Pick honorees like Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, and Clayton Kershaw — a fitting farewell for one of the best arms his generation ever saw.
