January 2 in Dodgers History: Charles Ebbets announces plan to build Ebbets Field in Brooklyn (1912)

Brooklyn Dodgers president Charles Ebbets announced his intention on January 2, 1912 to purchase 4.5 acres of land in the Pigtown section of Brooklyn to construct a new stadium with concrete and steel construction and a capacity of 23,000 seats. The ballpark would be named after Ebbets himself and would replace the aging wooden Washington Park.
