Brooklyn Dodgers president Charles Ebbets announced his intention on January 2, 1912 to purchase 4.5 acres of land in the Pigtown section of Brooklyn to construct a new stadium with concrete and steel construction and a capacity of 23,000 seats. The ballpark would be named after Ebbets himself and would replace the aging wooden Washington Park.
