Born as an expansion team in 2002, the Texans built their identity around a handful of generational defenders and record-setting playmakers. Ranking the greatest Houston Texans players of all time means celebrating the stars who carried a young franchise, from a three-time Defensive Player of the Year to the most productive receiver in team history. Here is our ranked list of the legends in battle red.
1. J.J. Watt (DE · 2011-2020)
One of the most dominant defenders of his era, Watt won three NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards in Houston and was a five-time First-Team All-Pro. His 101 sacks are the most in franchise history, and his all-around disruption made him the face of the team for a decade.
2. Andre Johnson (WR · 2003-2014)
The greatest offensive player in Texans history, Johnson led the NFL in receptions twice and receiving yards twice. He remains the franchise leader in catches, yards, and touchdowns, and his consistency and physicality earned seven Pro Bowl selections in Houston.
3. DeAndre Hopkins (WR · 2013-2019)
A spectacular contested-catch artist, Hopkins racked up multiple 1,000-yard seasons and All-Pro honors during his seven years in Houston. His combination of body control and reliable hands made him one of the most productive receivers in the league while with the Texans.
4. DeMeco Ryans (LB · 2006-2011)
The 2006 Defensive Rookie of the Year and a tackling machine, Ryans anchored the Houston defense at middle linebacker. A two-time Pro Bowler with the Texans, he was a respected leader who later returned to lead the franchise as its head coach.
5. Duane Brown (OT · 2008-2017)
The steady left tackle who protected Houston's quarterbacks for a decade, Brown earned multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro nods. A first-round pick who became one of the best blindside protectors in the league, he was a foundation of the team's offensive line.
6. Arian Foster (RB · 2009-2015)
An undrafted success story who led the NFL in rushing in 2010, Foster became the most productive running back in franchise history. A four-time Pro Bowler in Houston, he combined power, vision, and receiving ability as the centerpiece of the offense.
7. Brian Cushing (LB · 2009-2017)
The 2009 Defensive Rookie of the Year, Cushing was a hard-hitting and instinctive linebacker who spent his entire career in Houston. Despite injuries, his intensity and tackling made him a defensive cornerstone alongside the team's pass-rushing stars.
8. Johnathan Joseph (CB · 2011-2019)
A shutdown cornerback who locked down opposing receivers for nearly a decade, Joseph earned Pro Bowl recognition in Houston. His coverage skills and longevity made him one of the most reliable defensive backs in franchise history.
9. Owen Daniels (TE · 2006-2013)
A dependable receiving tight end and two-time Pro Bowler with the Texans, Daniels was a favorite target over the middle for years. His route running and red-zone presence made him a steady contributor throughout Houston's early playoff pushes.
10. Whitney Mercilus (LB · 2012-2021)
A productive edge rusher who complemented J.J. Watt for years, Mercilus tallied dozens of sacks and forced fumbles in Houston. His ability to pressure the quarterback made him one of the most important defenders of the team's playoff-contending era.
