From the Doomsday Defense of the 1970s to the dynasty Triplets of the 1990s, few franchises can match the lineage of America's Team. Choosing the greatest Dallas Cowboys players of all time means weighing Pro Football Hall of Famers across five decades, Super Bowl champions, and record-setters who defined their positions. Here is our ranked list of the legends who built the star.
1. Emmitt Smith (RB · 1990-2002)
The NFL's all-time leading rusher with 18,355 yards, Smith was the engine of the 1990s dynasty. He won three Super Bowls, was named league MVP in 1993, and earned Super Bowl XXVIII MVP honors. No Cowboy combined production and championship impact at a higher level.
2. Bob Lilly (DT · 1961-1974)
Nicknamed 'Mr. Cowboy,' Lilly was the franchise's first-ever draft pick and the cornerstone of the Doomsday Defense. An 11-time Pro Bowler and seven-time first-team All-Pro, he anchored the Super Bowl VI title team and became the first lifelong Cowboy enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
3. Roger Staubach (QB · 1969-1979)
Captain America led Dallas to two Super Bowl titles and was named MVP of Super Bowl VI. Famous for late-game comebacks and coining the term 'Hail Mary,' Staubach posted a winning record as a starter and is a member of the NFL's 1970s All-Decade Team.
4. Troy Aikman (QB · 1989-2000)
The triggerman of three Super Bowl championships in four years, Aikman was MVP of Super Bowl XXVII. A six-time Pro Bowler renowned for his accuracy and poise, he holds the franchise records for passing yards and completions and is enshrined in Canton.
5. Randy White (DT · 1975-1988)
'The Manster' was a relentless interior force who earned co-MVP honors at Super Bowl XII. White made nine straight Pro Bowls and was a fixture on the All-Pro teams of his era, carrying the torch of the Doomsday Defense into the 1980s.
6. Michael Irvin (WR · 1988-1999)
'The Playmaker' was the emotional heartbeat and big-play target of the 90s dynasty, winning three Super Bowls. A five-time Pro Bowler, Irvin once strung together 11 straight 100-yard games and remains one of the most dominant possession receivers in team history.
7. Mel Renfro (CB · 1964-1977)
A 10-time Pro Bowler who made the Pro Bowl in each of his first 10 seasons, Renfro starred at both safety and cornerback. He intercepted 52 passes, won two Super Bowls, and was a lockdown anchor of the secondary throughout the franchise's first golden era.
8. DeMarcus Ware (LB · 2005-2013)
The greatest pass rusher in team history, Ware is the franchise's all-time sack leader. He recorded a club-record 20 sacks in 2008, made seven Pro Bowls in Dallas, and earned four first-team All-Pro nods before his enshrinement in Canton.
9. Larry Allen (OL · 1994-2005)
One of the most physically dominant linemen ever, Allen won a Super Bowl as a rookie and made seven first-team All-Pro squads with Dallas. Legendary for his freakish strength, he paved the way for Emmitt Smith's record-setting prime and reached the Hall of Fame.
10. Tony Dorsett (RB · 1977-1987)
A Rookie of the Year who won Super Bowl XII as a first-year pro, Dorsett was the franchise's premier rusher before Emmitt Smith. He topped 1,000 yards in eight of his first nine seasons and authored an NFL-record 99-yard touchdown run in 1983.
