The card collector's view

Coffey's rookie card is the 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #111 — tied with the 1981-82 Wayne Gretzky as the most valuable card in the set and a vintage Oilers cornerstone. Beware counterfeits, which exist for this card. Topps did not include Coffey in their 1981-82 set, making the OPC the only mainstream rookie. O-Pee-Chee and Topps releases from 1982-2001 cover his Oilers, Penguins, Kings, Red Wings, Whalers, Flyers, Blackhawks, Hurricanes, and Bruins stops. Modern Upper Deck SP Authentic, The Cup, and retrospective Oilers sets offer signed and patch options for the Coffey collection.

About Paul Coffey at FreshDCards

Paul Coffey is the speed-skating defenseman from the Oilers dynasty who scored 48 goals from the blueline in 1985-86 — still the second-highest goal total ever by an NHL defenseman, behind only Bobby Orr. Three Stanley Cups in Edmonton (1984, 1985, 1987), a fourth with Pittsburgh (1991). Three Norris Trophies. 1,531 career points across 21 seasons — second among all NHL defensemen, behind only Ray Bourque. He played for nine franchises across his long career and his combination of speed plus offense changed what teams expected from the position behind Orr.
