George Mikan was the NBA’s first true superstar. The 6’8” Minneapolis Lakers center won five championships in six years (1949–1954, missing only 1951), led the league in scoring three consecutive seasons, and was so dominant the NBA widened the lane from 6 to 12 feet to limit him. Three All-Star teams (the All-Star Game didn’t exist until 1951, halfway through his career), Hall of Fame in 1959. Without Mikan, professional basketball doesn’t survive its first decade.
