The card collector's view

Potvin's rookie card is the 1974-75 O-Pee-Chee #195 — a key vintage hockey rookie with high-grade examples in steady demand. The 1974-75 Topps #195 is the US-market parallel. There's also a 1974-75 OPC #252 second-year subset card frequently confused with the RC. O-Pee-Chee and Topps releases from 1975-88 capture his entire Islanders captaincy and dynasty run. Modern Upper Deck SP Authentic and retrospective Islanders sets offer signed memorabilia for the Potvin collection.

About Denis Potvin at FreshDCards

Denis Potvin was the defensive cornerstone of the Islanders' four-straight dynasty. First overall in 1973, Calder winner in 1974, three Norris Trophies (1976, 1978, 1979), and four straight Cups from 1980-1983 as captain of one of hockey's most efficient teams. He retired as the all-time defenseman scoring leader — since surpassed by Ray Bourque — with 310 goals and 742 assists in a career spent entirely on Long Island. Rangers fans still chant 'Potvin sucks' at Madison Square Garden, which is its own kind of legacy.
